The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a network of receptors distributed throughout the human body, as well as in most animals including dogs and cats. It consists mainly of two cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2. Various cannabinoids bind to these receptors, activate them, or regulate them. This includes endocannabinoids produced by the body such as 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) and anandamide (AEA), and phytocannabinoids (those found in plants) such as cannabidiol (CBD). Anandamide is present in the milk of breastfeeding mothers, including in animals, which demonstrates the importance of this mechanism and its safety. This system also includes enzymes responsible for the synthesis and degradation of cannabinoids - completing the cycle of regulation and body response. The ECS plays an important role in the development of the central nervous system, synaptic plasticity, and response to endogenous and environmental stimuli. This system manages various physiological processes, such as mood, pain response, metabolism, immune function, and sleep. It is responsible for maintaining homeostasis, and when some factor disrupts it, the system activates to help the body regain full functionality.
